It’s mission is to restore people to usefulness from their present broken state.
The name for the home is drawn from the runaway slave, Onesimus, whose story is found in the book Philemon (New Testament). The name Onesimus means useful. The Apostle Paul asked a personal favor of Philemon to accept back his runaway slave (instead of punishment by death) who once was ’useless’ to Philemon and had now become useful to both Paul and Philemon after his conversion and discipleship by Paul. In the same way, we would expect people to come into the Onesimus House in a broken and useless state and to return to their home or society restored to a useful condition.
Who does the Onesimus House serve?
The Onesimus House serves individuals and families who are stranded, who are homeless, or who
need to
be restored from
poverty, alcoholism,
and drug addiction. It may even serve those who cannot function in
their present home with their present family. It often serves those who
have recently been released from incarceration. If we receive requests
from orphans or minors, we will deal with those at that time. We try to
work closely with Social Services and the Police Department as well as
the South Fork/Monte Vista/Del Norte Ministerial Alliances in being
available to the people seeking help from them. >> Download our House Rules & Programs & Information Guide for Prospects, Families, or Health Professionals, Social Workers, & Judicial Authorities.
