Introduction: We are going to take a chronological look at the events on the days of the Passion Week as harmonized by the four Gospels. This will be great fun and enlightening! WeÕve all read pieces but now we will be able to put it all together in our heads.

LetÕs now walk in the footsteps of JesusÉ.

The Setting: Many people had gathered to Jerusalem for the Passover. (explain) You can visualize a festival atmosphere as people are getting ready for the big meal later this week. You can visualize people seeing family and friends they havenÕt seen in awhile. You can imagine that people were only partially focused on the purpose of the Passover because they were more focused on the fun of the day. People would be Ôcarrying onÕ with little thought to the original Passover.

Sunday  - the first day of the week that Jesus was crucified and later resurrected. This day has become known as Palm Sunday. This year it is on Ap 9, always the Sunday before Easter.

Jesus descends from Bethany (map) and enters the temple precincts in Jerusalem. Jesus Wept over Jerusalem as he overlooked her prior to entering the city. That evening he returns to Bethany to lodge with His disciples. Appx  1-2 miles each way. Ironically, yet prophetically he entered through the Sheep Gate.

( explain sheep gate ) (second map)

The sheep gate is where the shepherds would let sheep in and out of the city walls. There were multiple gates in and out of the city. Even one called the dung gate.

Sheep were a prominent animal in the sacrificial system of Israel. Sheep were used for many illustrations of man and his relationship with the Good Shepherd. The innocent lamb without blemish leads us to an understanding of the role of Jesus as GodÕs sacrifice for our sins.

Text:  {Mt 21:1-11, Mk 11:1-11, Lu 19:29-44, { Lu 19:41-44 also Jn 11:35 for Lazarus} Jn 12:12-19}

Read Mt 21:1-11:  each passage as each one adds just a little somethingÉ. Ask kids to read for us!

POINTS:

Mt 21: 4,5 cites the Prophecy of Is 62:11 & Ze 9:9 and Fulfilled this day

            Also shows that Christ is King. He is meek. He is humble

DEFINITIONS:

Zion – originally referred to the pre-Israelite hill of Jerusalem, then came to be used for Jerusalem and finally for the new Jerusalem

Daughter of Zion - ?the church which would grow to be the bride of Christ

Hosanna – 1. Acclamation of praise. 2. Blessed 3.Hebrew or Aramaic word translated as a prayer of Ôsave nowÕ or Ôsave we beseech theeÕ

v.6  The disciples obeyed.

v.8  Where did this crowd come from? A. (Jn 12:12) - those that were there for the feast

Now Read Mk 11:1-11:

POINTS:

v.2  Jesus had Ôover the horizonÕ radar! How did He know the colt was there?!  A. omniscience

v.3  Did Jesus have a rightful claim to someoneÕs colt?  A. GodÕs claims come first.

Nu 3:13 ÒFor all the first-born are MineÉI am the Lord.Ó

Mt 6:33  ÒBut seek ye first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.Ó

v.3  How did Jesus know that the man would release the colt? That man was a friend of Jesus amen? Do we willingly give like him?

And read Lu 19:29-40

POINTS:

            The stones would cry out. Praise and Joy cannot be stopped. Holy God is worthy of praise. All creation praises Him.

Read now: Lu 19:41-44  Wept = shows the humanity and deep compassion of Christ

POINTS:

Read also Jn 11:35 for Lazarus – Jesus wept.

In 70 a.d. Jerusalem was totally destroyed

Do not miss your day of visitation!  (big saying in Africa)

Finally read Jn 12:12-19

POINTS:

v.12 – why the multitudes were there

v.16 – the disciples didnÕt quite understand everything at firstÉ.but did later as they remembered them. It put 2 and 2 together so much so that they were ready to give their lives; and they did.

v.17 – the same multitude that saw Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead as well as people they told.

v.19 – note how the Pharisees responded.

At the end of this day Jesus returns to lodge in Bethany

Monday – Jesus again returns from Bethany and enters Jerusalem. Jesus had to do some Ôhouse cleaningÕ prior to leaving earth!

Text:  {Mt 21:18-20, Mk 11:12-14,20,21} Cursing the fig tree

On the way into the city Jesus gives us a dramatic object lesson. Read text Mt 21:18-20

v18. Jesus had the common experiences of humanity e.g. hunger, sorrow, natural growth, sleep, poverty, weariness, a physical body. They did not master Him.

v19a Jesus had the power over nature. We do not; even though some think they do.

v19b. Why did Jesus curse this lowly fig tree?!!  Was He being a divine bully? Note: it had no fruit! Does your life have fruit that is borne from faith?  Remember our lesson from James 2 of faith and worksÉ

Mal 3:8,9 ÒWill a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, ÔHow have we robbed Thee?Õ In tithes and offerings. ÒYou are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you!Ó

& Gal 3:10 ÒFor as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, ÒCursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law to perform themÓ.

Many people are trying to obey the law and be good people. They are cursed because it is impossible to achieve. The law is only a tutor to lead us to Christ – to show us the utter hopelessness of being perfect.

v21. The Power of Faith: Faith is prescribed to us by Jesus. There are blessings from faith and promises of this faith to us believers. It doesnÕt mean we will have power over nature and be genies. It means we will be able to endure things, accomplish things, overcome obstacles, and be used by God as vessels of His power.

v22. Our faith needs to be coupled with prayer; not wishing on a star.

Look how Mark recounts the story: Mk 11:12-14,20,21

The disciples noticed the dried up treeÉ

v22-26 – this is how Jesus answers them. (mark read)

v25,26. Not only is faith prescribed but forgiveness is prescribed. This is getting tough amen? Note that pardon or forgiveness is promised to us though. We need it.

Cleansing of the temple Text:  {Mt 21:12,13, Mk 11:15-17, Lu 19:45,46}

Now that He is in the city, He has some housecleaning to do.

Read text: Mt 21:12,13, Mk 11:15-17

This system of sacrifice had turned into capitalism and in the temple no less. Requirements of worship had become so secondary that people wanted the convenient way. Ouch!! Do we do that too? Do we desire just a ceremonial / superficial worship service just to meet the weekly requirement? Often, we want the power and blessing of God but rather to be used for our own purposes.

Text:  {Mt 21:14} Healing in the temple

v.14  This is what is all about! Come into the presence of the Lord and Be Healed. We can be spiritually blind not just physically blind. We can be spiritually lame not just physically lame. Be Healed in the Name of Jesus.

Jesus shows us the proper use of the temple. People that are blind and lame come to this church asking for help. Are we going to give them Jesus? Yes! Shout amen.

At the end of this day Jesus returns to lodge in Bethany

(lights out and pray)

These 2 days; Tuesday – Wednesday

The Setting: Multitudes were here for the Passover. Jesus had just stayed in Bethany with His disciples and come/gone from the city and the temple. He has been making a stir between all the people shouting Hosanna as well as upsetting the usual temple business. He shouted that my FatherÕs house shall be a house of prayer. We saw the human qualities of Jesus over these last two days; compassion, weeping, love, meekness, humility, and anger. Jesus teaches His disciples on the Mt of Olives and Jesus teaches many of the parables these two days. Read Lu 21:37-38

These 2 days; Tuesday – Wednesday

The chief priests and elders got wind of all of this temple commotion and the crowds clamoring around Jesus and even shouting Hosanna. They did not like this affront to their power and standing. They did not like how the people were intently listening to His teachings. (like today amen?). So they challenge Him by asking who gave Him this authority to teach. (see that happen today too)

Jesus disputes with the authorities.  {kids: Jesus and Pharisees} (explain Pharisees and Saducees and Del Nortees) {read Mt 21:23-27, ref: Mk 11:27-33, Lu 20:1-8}

After they refuse to answer for fear of being trapped by JesusÕ question, Jesus continues on with a couple of parables.  (explain what a parable is)

Two Sons and Wicked vine-growers Read: Vs. 31b, 32 This passage sums up the hearts of the priests and elders. {kids: Jesus and Pharisees}

Jesus continues with the parable of the landowner. This fully explains the rejection of Christ by His own people – especially the leaders.  {read Mt 21:33-43}

God has sent his prophets and people have refused their message and even killed them. He kept sending them and they kept getting killed. Next He sent His Son to us. Many refuse him and throw him out. God is this owner of the vineyard. He has taken the vineyard from the Jews and gave it to the Gentiles. We Gentiles had better produce fruit from this vineyard. The Pharisees understood that this parable was aimed at them but could not seize Jesus yet. As weÕll see, the Pharisees were not done trying though. Later this week, they would succeed.

Jesus goes on with other parables that explain the Kingdom of Heaven and who will remain in it and what will happen with those that are cast out. Jesus is engaging in some intense teaching to the multitudes around Him on these two days but these teachings have also been preserved for us and are true yet today.

---------------------------------------------{kids: Jesus and Pharisees}

Wedding feast – a classic one {ref: Mt 22:1-14). This parable again shows how God has called those that were invited to His wedding feast and they refused to come. The wedding feast will be when Christ returns for His church. Those that were invited did not attend and instead the filled the house with guests from all over. The guests that attend must have the right clothing or they got cast out. Likewise, if we are not clothed in the blood of Christ we will be cast out. Everyone is called but only those washed in the blood will be chosen as permanent residents of Heaven.

{kids: Jesus and Pharisees – bring coin} Tax Money – {ref: Mt 22:15-22} the Pharisees were boiling mad now. They cooked up a plant to trap Jesus. They brought a coin to Him and asked about paying the poll tax. Jesus condescended to their transparent attempt at trapping Him. He responds with a well known saying, ÒRender to Caesar the things that are CaesarÕs and to God the things that are GodÕs.Ó

This strikes home though. Do we render to God the things that are GodÕs? Barely. Everything we have is GodÕs; our homes, money, and family. Our time is GodÕs. Our life belongs to God. We squirm and complain about church and bible study getting in the way of the rest of our schedule. We struggle with letting go of our tithes when weÕd rather be paying bills or going on vacation.

SadduceeÕs question – Next, a group of people come to him that do not believe in the resurrection. They are testing Jesus with their seemingly impossible question. Jesus concludes with the fact that God is the God of the living not the dead. Amen?!!

------------------------------------

The multitudes were cheering! Nobody had put down these oppressors like Jesus was doing. The Pharisees and Sadducees now combined forces to see how they could finish off Jesus. They called in a lawyer and engaged him to ask Jesus the question. {kids: Jesus, lawyer, and Pharisees}

The great commandment –  The lawyer asks Jesus which is the great commandment in the law. Silly question. Jesus sums up the entire law with the two great commandments. {Mt 22:37-40}

JesusÕ now has a question for them. He stumps them with, ÒWhose son is the Christ?Ó They answer, ÒHe is the son of DavidÓ. So Jesus asks them why does David say, ÒThe Lord said to my Lord, ÔSit at My right hand until I put thine enemies beneath thy feet.Ó? If David then calls Him ÔLord,Õ how is He his son?Ó

This totally silenced them. The answer is, Jesus is descended from King David 14 generations. Yet David knew what even the mother of Jesus knew; Jesus is Lord and He sits at the right hand of God. Jesus came in the flesh and gave up His glory in heaven for but awhile only to be crucified, buried and raised up again. Thereafter He appeared to hundreds of people over 40 days and ascended back to Heaven to sit at the right hand of God the Father. Amen.

---------------------------------------{kids: Jesus and Disciples – congregation is multitude}

Jesus now turns to the multitudes and the disciples and denounces these Pharisees because they are just religious talkers. They donÕt do what they say others ought to do. They oppress the people with many tricky rules derived from the law. They seek position, wealth, and status and at the expense of the people they are supposed to be leading.

Woes on Pharisees – Jesus goes on to pronounce 7 woes on them.  ThatÕs W-O-E, not W-H-O-A.

Jesus concludes His visit to the temple today with a lament over Jerusalem. He declares that the house will be left desolate and they shall not see Him again until they declare their faith in Jesus.

--------------------------------------- {kids: Jesus and Disciples leave temple for Mt of Olives}

Jesus is leaving the temple and He prophesies to the disciples what will happen in 70 a.d.. Jesus continues on to the Mt of Olives. (  ----- distance away and outside the city walls )

Jesus teaches a most powerful lesson that they thought was to be an immediate happening and yet we are still looking for today.  He teaches them about the end times and things to come announcing the return of Christ. Since Christ has yet to be crucified, the disciples were not quite clicking in on this. They would remember this teaching after Jesus ascends to heaven and the Holy Spirit comes upon them.  ?Read Mt 24: Up to 42. {kids: Jesus and Disciples sitting and listening?}

These are the signs, and the exhortations from Jesus. We will need them when these things start to happen. In fact, they have started to happen. The fig tree is ripening. Will you be Ôcarried away by the floodÕ because you were not ready or will you be found working in the field for the Lord?

Dear brothers and sisters, examine your lives and your day-timer and your checkbook. They are a reflection of what field you are in and whether you are carrying on eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage.

----------------------------------------

Ready: What does ÔreadyÕ look like? Jesus continues with the parable of the ten virgins. Five of the virgins were prepared and enjoyed the appearance of the bridegroom. Jesus is this bridegroom and we should be ready for His appearance at any time.  Vs 13, ÒBe on alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour.Ó

Jesus next teaches with a parable of the ten talents. The lesson of the parable is that (vs 29,30) Òfor to everyone who has shall more be given, and he shall have an abundance, but from the one who does not have even what he does have shall be taken away. And cast out the worthless slave into the outer darkness in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.Ó

Brethren, we have. WE have the HS dwelling within us. WE are promised more, even an abundance. We must use this gift weÕve been given wisely just as the one slave did. Do not have your heavenly privileges withdrawn because you did nothing with the gift of the HS and salvation.

------------------------------------------

Jesus continues these teachings with a statement on how the judgment will be carried out. Mt 25:31-34. Note how the kingdom that we are going to was prepared for us from the time of the preparation of the foundation of the world. Again, Jesus is talking about His second coming and the disciples have yet to see Him leave.

Do you want to know how you can be that faithful steward with the talents you have been entrusted with? Mt 25:35,36 answers. The end result is plainly stated in vs 46.

----------------------------------------------

Finish with Luke 22:1-6  {Judas, Satan and Pharisees }

The Jews and Judas plot against Jesus. Satan enters Judas. The stage is being set for the betrayal at the Last Supper which will happen tomorrow on Thursday.  Read, Mk 14:1,2,10,11 ref: Mt 26:1,2, 14-16  {Judas leaves Jesus and disciples and goes off to Pharisees }

We finish this glorious day of teaching on the Mt. of Olives with JesusÕ prophecy and statement that He will be delivered up and crucified. Meanwhile, the priests and elders plot. Read Mt 26:3-5

Jesus was anointed at Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper. Jesus issues a timeless tribute to the faith of Mary whilst Judas stomps out and sold out Jesus to the priests.

Conclusion:  Has this been a couple of full days of teaching or what?!

Prophecy  >>  Fulfilled

Ps 41:9      >>    Mk 14:10

Even my close friend in whom I trusted Who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me. (Judas)

And Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve went off to the chief priests in order to betray Him to them.

Zec 11:12  >>    Mt 26:14,15 and 27:3 & (6,7)

And I said to them, ÒIf it is good in your sight, give me my wages; but if not, never mind!Ó So they weighted out thirty shekels of silver as my wages. (Judas)

Then one of the twelve named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests, and said, ÒWhat are you willing to give me to deliver Him up to you?Ó And they weighted out to him thirty pieces of silver.

Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.

We learned: Lu 21:37-38  temple in morning / Mt Olives afternoon

Jesus taught on these two days many well-known parables describing the heart of the Pharisees, describing what the Kingdom of Heaven is like and coming judgment day.

It spoke to them at that moment and is timeless wisdom for us now.

Jesus has given us a narrative to know the signs of His second coming. JesusÕ words to the disciples demonstrated His divine knowledge and willingness to go to the cross for us.

What does this mean? Why did He go to the cross? Why does His death do anything for us?

Spiritual Purposes of His Sacrifice -  Book of Hebrews

God has spoken to us in these last days through His Son, Jesus. The message of Jesus is the fulfillment of all that was spoken in the OT.  (ch 1)

As in the OT, the bible says, ÒWithout blood there is no remission of sinsÓ  (ch 9:22)

He was the Lamb of God, without blemish (no sin), offered by God for man to atone once and for all. (ch. 10)Jesus was briefly humbled, partook of flesh and blood, and through His death rendered powerless death and Satan.  (ch 1)

Levitical priests had to offer sacrifice for their sins too. There were many of them because they regularly died. (ch 7:23,27)

Levitical priests would pass through the curtain of the temple into the holy of Holies. Jesus passed through the veil of the flesh and tore down the curtain. (ch 9; 10:20)

We now have the law written on our hearts and direct access to God through Jesus. (ch 8)  The OT law could not save us. It was a tutor to lead us to Christ.

Through the crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus became our Perfect, High Priest who intercedes in Heaven, and is a living priest. (ch 9)

We can go to Jesus knowing HeÕll understand because He was tempted in every way like we are. (ch 4:14-16)

Thursday --   Preparation for the Passover. {Mt 26:17-19, Mk 14:12-16,}

Introduction: We are following a chronological look at the events on the days of the Passion Week as harmonized by the four Gospels. LetÕs continue our walk in the footsteps of JesusÉ.

(Catholics do the ÔStations of the CrossÕ)

The Setting: We left off last week (Lu 22:1-6) where the Passover was fast approaching and secretly the priests and Judas were plotting a betrayal away from the multitude of people. They were afraid of the people because they knew how they revered this Jesus of Nazareth. Remember the Passover aka the Feast of Unleavened Bread has been a tradition since the ÔExodusÕ days for them. Jesus was a Jew. Even He celebrated it.

Even before the exodus, unleavened bread is first mentioned in the bible in Genesis 19:3, about 2093 B.C., where Lot bakes it for the two angels that came to warn him that Sodom was going to be destroyed. YouÕll remember that the angels instructed Lot and his family to leave the city and they were Ôpassed overÕ while God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot was AbrahamÕs nephew and the Jews called Abraham their father.

Today we are going to look at Thursday of the Passion Week wherein Jesus shares the infamous ÔLast SupperÕ with His disciples, Judas goes off the betray Him, Jesus gives the oft repeated teaching of washing othersÕ feet and being a servant to others.

Today weÕll see where Jesus is betrayed, arrested, tried and convicted then hung on a cross. All in fulfillment of prophecy spoken hundreds of years earlier.

We have read much from the Gospel of Matthew. Today weÕll look more at Luke and JohnÕs accounts.

Read Lu 22:7-13   Again, divine over-the-hill-radar vision. And again, GodÕs claims come first. This man willingly gave the ÔTeacherÕ the use of the room. The disciples willingly obeyed.

This feast lasted a week. In Lev 23 – God gives the appointed times of feasts and religious festivals as holy convocations; in vs. 6 God says for seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. The first day you shall not do any laborious work.  Vs. 9 - You shall bring in a sheaf of your first fruits to the priest. The priest waves it before the Lord and on that day you shall offer a male lamb one year old without defect for a burnt offering to the Lord.

Do you see how Jesus had this Ôbig pictureÕ in mind? He was that lamb without defect. Jesus knew He was going to be this Passover Lamb for all of humanity yet the disciples had not put 2 and 2 together.

Jesus shares the Passover meal with His disciples. Last Supper (evening – 3 p.m.?)

(map) Upper room: Essene Qtr.  Essenes were like monks?

Read Lu 22:14-20 {Mt 26:20, Mk 14:17,18 } The first communion

Read Lu 22:21-23 His betrayal predicted and traitor designated. {Ref Mk 14:22-25}

Read Lu 22:24-30 Includes the dispute among Disciples

Turn now to Gospel of John: John Chs 13-17:  John records many of the details during this event:

Washing the disciples feet, {Jn 13:5-10}
